@ 기본내용:
- between, each other, either, a couple은 두 개를 뜻하는 단어다.
- among, one another, any one of, several은 세 개 이상을 뜻한다.
BAD: Either go to sleep, read a book in bed, or get up and work.
(내 논문에서 이런 표현을 쓴 적이 있었다. --;;)
4장 내용을 적은 이유는 아래 두 SPLENDID(제일 좋은) 문장을 적어놓고 싶어서.
SPLENDID: You can use any one of these programs with either system.
이 문장이 SPELNDID가 된 이유는,
4장의 주된 내용인 any one of 와 either가 동시에 사용되었기 때문이다.
(with either system 이렇게도 문장을 적는구나!!!)
SPLENDID: The can might contain apples, peaches, or pears.
이 문장이 SPELNDID가 된 이유는,
any one of를 사용해서 정확히 적을 수도 있지만,
그 표현을 생략하는 편이 more elegant 하기 때문이다.
GOOD: You can order any one of fish, fowl, or floribunda; if you prefer, you may choose any one of the classes flora, fauna, *or* Technical Writing 207.
위의 SPLENDID와 비교해보라.
(이 문장을 적은 이유는 *and*가 아니라 *or*인 게 놀라워서!!)
5. ONLY
@ 기본내용: only의 위치가 매우 중요하다.
GOOD: Only I love you.
GOOD: I only love you.
GOOD: I love only you.
5장 내용을 적은 이유는 아래 두 문장이 BAD라서.
BAD: I was only trying to help.
BAD: I only was trying to help.
GOOD: My only intention was to support you in your moment of need. |
