acronym: 두문자열 (MIPS: Million Instructions Per Second)
@ 기본원리: 제일 먼저 사용할 때 정의하라. 정의할 때는 풀어쓴 내용을 먼저 쓰고, 그 뒤에 괄호 안에 acronym을 넣어라.
GOOD: You can define and use temrs such as random-access memory (RAM), central processing unit (CPU), local-area network (LAN), and snafu.
snafu나 radar의 경우 충분히 일반적인 단어가 되어서
더이상 acronym으로 사용되지 않고, 일반 단어로 취급된다.
@ 기본원리: 단위에 사용되는 acronym도 있다.
GOOD: You can give measurements in units such as MIPS, MHz, Mbyte, and sec; you should define them on first use, unless you are writing in a forum where the abbreviations are common and are well known to your audience.
Megabyte, MB, and Mbyte 모두 좋지만, 한 문서 내에서 섞어쓰지는 말아라. 예를 들면, KB와 Mbyte 처럼.
acronym을 복수로 쓸 때는 s를 붙이지 말아라.
3 seconds나 3 sec는 되지만, 3 secs라고 쓰지 말아라.
3 megabytes 또는 3 Mbyte (o), 3 Mbytes (x)
@ 기본원리:
- e.g. (exempli gratia) means 'for example'. 반드시 뒤에 콤마
- i.e. (id est) means 'that is'. 반드시 뒤에 콤마
- etc. (et cetera) means 'and so on'. 반드시 앞에 콤마
- et al. (et alia) means 'and others'. 반드시 citation을 위해서만 쓰고, 문장 내에서 'and coleagues', 'and associates', or 'and coworkers'를 대신하려고 쓰지는 말아라.
위 표현들은 반드시 괄호 안에서만 사용해라.
UGLY: Joe had had a tough day; e.g., he had to drive all the way to Berkeley ~.
GOOD: Joe also freaked Lyn out by going off line at the wrong moments (e.g., he forgot to mention that he waas on his way to Berkeley).
GOOD: Joe did recognize that the day had a few silver linings; for example, he got to drive his brand new car.
UGLY: Lyn gave John Camache, the cover designer, various informational materials: the book manuscript, her mother's sketches, photographs of Red and BB, etc.
UGLY: Dupre et al. [1994] reported a need to reengineer the publishing process to match thechnological advances.
GOOD: Lyn's team [Dupre et al., 1994] reported that ~~.
GOOD: Dupre and associates [1994] reproted that ~~.
e.g.와 etc. 를 동시에 사용하지 말아라. 둘다 incomplete의 의미가 있으므로 중복이다.
BAD: There are several network-interrupt status bits (e.g., A, B, C, etc.)
@ 기본원리: 풀어쓰는 표현을 대문자로 쓰지 말아라.
UGLY: Lyn's Randomly Accessible Memory (RAM) is becoming entirely too random.
GOOD: Lyn's random-access memory (RAM) gets dumped daily.
@ 기본원리: acronym이 '풀어쓰는 표현' 첫글자들로 이루어지지 않았다면, 진하게 하거나, 작은 대문자로 쓰거나, 밑줄을 그어 표시하라. italic은 사용하지 말아라.
GOOD: Lumina sells *de*cision *mo*deling *s*oftware (Demos).
@ 기본원리: acronym에 마침표를 사용하지 말아라. 하지만 예외는 있다.
BAD: Converting to R.I.S.C. architectures is fraught with unanticipated danger.
GOOD: They are U.S. tourists.
GOOD: The new popular song in China is "U.N. Forgiven."
BAD: People (eg, Lyn) do not like to find bugs in their hair. |
